This piece has some Christmas colors, but it isn't meant for Christmas necessarily. Rather, it is meant for home decor, particularly decor with red and green, or light gray (to liven a light gray room up, to give it some pizzazz).
This might look good on a concrete wall, for instance.
Reds add passion and energy to a room, greens cool it down a bit. Green is opposite red on the color wheel and makes the reds look intense.
The symmetrical butterflies echo the symmetry in the piece.
This is part of a series where I use the same basic design to arrive at different color treatments and moods. I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio.
