This piece was made in January of 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic and firebirds seem like an apt symbol for this period of history. The forest fires have raged in the west, the pandemic has raged through the population, people are losing their jobs, and we feel a need to move on.
That's where the firebird comes in. In mythology, the firebird represents a type of transformation and healing. The firebird burns itself up every decade or so (it has longevity, so it can afford to do that), and then rises from the ashes to fly again. It is also rumored to have wisdom and healing power, especially if you get a glimpse of its jewel-like eye, or dream of it.
If we are going through a serious life-changing event, the firebird is rumored to be the best bird to heal us. The firebird doesn't just show itself to anyone.

I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio.
