This painting was done by hand with acrylic paints on canvas, so any prints you order will have some hints of the canvas weaving.
Depicted are three owls, aka kings. They are kings of the night. Each owl wears a leafy crown with small orange berries in them. As is typical with barn owls, these owls eyes are very dark and big, and better to see you, my dear. They have the capacity to see just about anything in the dark, even the nefarious doings of others. And they are watchful.
For my own interpretation of symbolism, my father represents the owl. As these owls have heart-shaped heads, which most barn owls do, it would also represent my father whose heart was always in present, and yes, largely in his thoughts (i.e. head-space). He showed compassion for those he loved. The owl as able to decipher what is dark and hidden also represents my father. My father as wise also fits.
I have no idea why I painted three of them, but perhaps it will become clear at some point. Perhaps they are just three expressions; the first being the look of compassion, the second being the look of sympathy, longing and innocence, and the third representing wisdom and the ability to see deep into things.
The idea for this painting came in a dream as my contribution to an art show in my area. It is also from my blue period of paintings. I just started my first painting for my rose period, and will be showing it when it is completed. For now, the blue period dominates.
Other possible symbolism:
- leaves as crowns: fertility of imagination and growth, power, immortality and royalty.
- two white butterflies: purity, spiritual messages, messages from the other side, peace, abundance, spiritual transformation
- orange berries: fertility, fast moving signs of new opportunities
- stars: divine guidance and protection
- galaxies: expectations, wishes, goals and inspiration
- night: spirit, peace, heaven
The original is sold. The painting is 11" x 14", acrylic paint on canvas, 1.25" profile painted on all sides (continuous painting around the edges), glazed to protect the longevity of the piece, un-framed to give the new owner the option of framing to fit their décor, and comes with a certificate of authenticity. There is a signature, name of the piece and date of completion on the back.
As for prints and other products available directly from this shop, please note there are also pillows, totes, puzzles and other surprises.

As a fellow symbolist myself, I really appreciate this painting and its meanings Lise. It inspires me to create more such things in memory of my own lost ones. Beautiful work. And as always, I love those blues and golds.
Lise Winne replied:
A lot of the time I do a painting and then look up the symbolism later, but this time I knew what I was doing. Thank you. Always sweet to get your comments.
