I made this piece for home decor like pillows (perhaps with a matching print on the wall). I decided to try a modern approach using geometrics, but in the end decided it needed softer shapes (I am more noted for the latter as my work tends to be very floral). In other words, this is a foray from what I usually make. However, in the beginning, I started painting and drawing abstract designs, lots of them. It is not where I stayed as I felt restless to explore so many more styles and expressions, which eventually led me to teach art (k - 12).
So, in a way, I am coming back to my roots with a piece like this.
Pictured are thin sharp diamonds coming from a center diamond with puffs full of more stripes. In fact everything is a bit stripe-y and geometric, except for the border which I decided needed the softer shapes to counteract all of the sharpness and hard edges of the rest of it.
Diamonds are symbolic of stability. Zig zags are symbolic of rapid changes. Polka dots, until 1900, were symbols of plague and disease, but then became symbols of "the child within". I tend to see polka dots in my work as "seeds" which mean potential not yet realized, and hope for a good outcome. Stripes symbolized rebellion in the 1960s, but may have come to mean stability and multi-tasking in the present day.
The colors that predominate, I have sampled some of them in case you want to mix and match decor items:
* olive green border: #3b5c01
* background sand color: #e7d6cf
* mustard color: #eeb854
* off-white or linen color: #f8f5e6
* red (approximate): #fb0601
My little signature in the lower right corner does not appear on pillows, blankets, duvets or shower curtains to keep within the tradition of home decor. Most other products do.
