This is what milkweed looks like in November in upstate New York. The monarch butterflies have flown off (they like milkweed best), the birds have flown off too, the insects have gone into hiding, and everything is a lot more still. As winter begins to attack the plants, they turn a beige or heather color, almost white in some instances. The leaves on the bush in the background have turned a dark brown, however.
Underneath the heather-like grasses a little green is still left over where the frost hasn't been able to seep down yet. But they are certainly in shock as a lot of the blades aren't green all the way through. The emerald is disappearing.
November is a month to cherish. Although it is not shouting colors, the monochromatic color scheme is exciting all on its own if you like subtlety. I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio.
