Artist's Description

This is the milkweed flower found in meadows and by the road side in upstate NY, so therefor it is a wildflower. The flower is a light pink with clusters. The milkweed plant has broad leaves. In the background are little yellow flowers, probably buttercups.

I found this in upstate NY in a meadow where dragonflies, honeybees and butterflies go. It is largely undisturbed as far as people trampling through it. The grass is crabgrass which adds a beautiful texture behind the plant.

Milkweed is the host plant for Monarch butterflies and is best left alone and preserved for that reason.

This photograph was taken in its natural form without removing or adding flowers or other details.

Milkweed symbolism: resilience, hope, letting transformation happen

Buttercup symbolism: acknowledgement of the child within (can also mean silly - the more derisive meaning)

crabgrass symbolism: health and well being

About Lise Winne

Lise Winne

I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio. My primary mediums are painting, drawing, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, hand thrown pottery and relief sculpture. If you see pottery in my photographic work, it is my own hand-thrown piece. I have shown my work in galleries and through juried shows at art centers and museums. Some notables include The Delaware Art Museum, Haverford Center of the Arts,...
