This piece was made for Abbie Shores's challenge, "Edit This" #19 located here: https://fineartamerica.com/contests/edit-this-19.html
This is a collaborative piece between two artists.
I tried to make this piece look like something out of a storybook and used a lot of elements including Abbie's photo, of course, with my own digital painting, and a digital program to make it look like an illustration.
Visual elements in the piece are fairy orbs, flower pots, a low garden wall, a pigeon, a butterfly, a white bush, lush plants in the background, with a border design featuring detailed plants.
Butterflies represent transformation (and white ones usually denote a spirit of someone who has passed over). The symbolism for the pigeon is loving, kindness and sacrifice (they are related to the dove). The white bush symbolizes authenticity and purity. The fairy orbs represent spirits and blessings. The garden represents the soul.
I have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a masters degree in Art Education. I used to be an art teacher and taught grades K - 12. In order to teach art in the public schools, I needed to learn a lot of mediums. I have carried this into my art studio as well, painting in one area of the studio and making altered digital photographs in another part of the studio. My primary mediums are painting, drawing, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, hand thrown pottery and relief sculpture. If you see pottery in my photographic work, it is my own hand-thrown piece. I have shown my work in galleries and through juried shows at art centers and museums. Some notables include The Delaware Art Museum, Haverford Center of the Arts,...
