Description
There is quite the confetti of fallen leaves in this field full of heather, sticks and weeds, from maple leaves, from oak leaves and weed leaves. It is quite the potpourri and they all seem to have gotten stuck in the sticks.
This wonderful scene of heathers, goldenrod (both dried and flowering), maple, oak, pine with some sticks and weeds here and there is actually considered to be an empty lot. For me it has always been a beautiful refuge inside the city of Saratoga Springs, NY.
It has a unique history, the old site of an 1800s hotel which catered to people with horses, people who did not want to put their horses up in stables, and instead let them out on the beautiful fields to graze while their owners did business in the town, or went to the racetrack. The land has a beautiful view to the west.
In summer, I particularly like walking into it. The roads that lead to it are relatively quiet with the exception of some birds here and there. Once you are in the field, the sounds come alive with many species of birds, deer, insects and amphibians. There is a lot of milkweed too for the monarch butterflies. Dragonflies, white butterflies and bees flit around the incredible diversity of wildflowers.
A couple of years ago, Saratoga Hospital purchased the meadow for office buildings and lots of parking. What is one person's beautiful place to wander and to look at the view, is another person's empty lot to put ugly office buildings on. I think anyone can relate to grieving over these kinds of decisions, especially since nature, the last meadow inside the city, is under serious threat.
I hope some day that nature is not as throw-away as it is today.
This is my attempt to photograph the last of it before any bulldozers, saws, cranes and black-toppers arrive. I will have some of the winter to do it too, so I will be posting those photographs with the meadow in the snow soon.
Activists: to keep this land from being another lot for parking and offices (especially when there is "other land" they own for those purposes and is being used already in this capacity), contact SaveMorganStreet.com.
This is my own photography.
